International Steering Committee
The
German Minister of Education and Research, Mrs. Edelgard Bulmahn in her
letter of August 2003 has invited interested countries to explore ways
and means to realize the International Accelerator Facility for
Beams of Ions and Antiprotons at GSI, Darmstadt. The
constituent meeting of the International Steering Committee
for the International Accelerator Facility took place
on February 2, 2004.
The general goal of
the International Steering Committee is to promote and
prepare the construction and operation of the new Accelerator
Facility as International Laboratory.
Task of the Steering Committee The
task of the committee is to work out a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) for the preparation and negotiation phase. It will prepare an
intergovernmental agreement to be signed by the funding agencies or
ministries for the construction and operation of the International
Accelerator Facility at Darmstadt.
Composition of the Steering Committee The
Committee is composed of high level Government or funding agency
representatives from all the countries intending to contribute to the
funding of the construction and operation of the International
Accelerator Facility. The Steering Committee is chaired by H. Schunck
(German Ministry of Education and Research BMBF).
Modus operandi In
order to properly address scientific and technical issues as well as
administrative and funding issues two working groups are formed:
- Working Group on Scientific and Technical Issues (STI),
chair Dr. Horst Wenninger (CERN), and
- Working Group on Administrative and Funding Issues (AFI),
chair Prof. Örjan Skeppstedt (MSL).
Both
groups report to the Steering Committee on a regular basis. The
Steering Committee worked out their charges and nominated their
chairpersons and the members of the working groups.
