Research Highlights from 30 years of GSI
The ceremonial colloquium on the occasion of the GSI's 30th anniversary in August 2000 was held by Volker Metag, Professor of Physics at the University of Giessen and Research Director of GSI from 1992 to 1997. After many requests, we decided to publish his speech in GSI-Nachrichten, and it is our pleasure to present it to general public.
In everyday life the matter which surrounds us seems to be continuous. Only by physics methods a hierarchy of structures becomes visible.30 years of research with heavy-ion beams have secured GSI a place at the forefront of the study of the structure of matter. A broad spectrum from fundamental investigations in nuclear and atomic physics to interdisciplinary and medical applications has led to many new and widely recognized results; some of the highlights will be presented here.
