"Dynamic Stabilization of Rayleigh-taylor Instability in an Ablation Front"
The problem of mitigating the onset of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) in laser-plasma interactions is common both to the the fields of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and high energy density matter (HEDM). In the context of direct driven ICF, RTI arises in the ablation front during the compression phase causing the quenching of the hot spot. In the case of a thin foil accelerated by a laser , RTI affects the interaction of the plasma with the radiation pressure causing the formation of plasma clumps. In this PhD work it has been studied in detail the possibility of using for such a purpose the well-known mechanism of dynamic stabilization, already applied to other dynamical systems such as the inverted pendulum. In this context, a periodic acceleration superposed to the background gravity generates a vertical vibration of the ablation front itself. The effects of different driving modulations are analyzed from a theoretical point of view, with a focus on stabilization of ion beam driven ablation fronts. The new stability regions are found, and a comparison is made, in order to look for optimization. Finally, a first overview of a scheme for the experimental check of dynamic stabilization by means of the already available laser facilities is presented.

"The SULDIS Project: Super-intense Ultra-short Laser Driven Ion Sources"
In this talk, the aims and first results of the 4-year SULDIS Project are presented.
SULDIS aims at attaining major advances in the field of laser-driven ion acceleration, ex-ploiting a non-conventional, multi-disciplinary approach, joining experimental and theore-tical expertise from materials science and engineering with those from laser and plasma physics and computational science. The main ion acceleration mechanisms, from Target Normal Sheath Acceleration to Radiation Pressure and Shock Acceleration will be theore-tically investigated, using simplified analytical models and advanced multi-¬dimensional PIC simulations, to achieve deeper and more satisfactory understanding. We will also pro¬pose improvements and optimizations of the basic schemes. In this context, a major part of the research will focus on the design, production and testing of micro- and nano-engineered targets whose characteristics will be tailored to optimize the production of energetic ions. The experimental, theoretical and numerical results of the first year activities will be presented, together with an outline of the future programs, with special emphasis on the theoretical challenges to be faced to properly understand the behavior of advanced target configurations.

Michael Fiederle, Univ. Freiburg:
"Development of semiconductor pixel detectors using Medipix2 and Medipix3 readout electronics"
The recent progress of CdTe crystals and the availability of interconnection technology open the possibility of processing CdTe detectors with small pixels down to 55 µm and high efficiency for X-ray energies above 20 keV. In combination with the state of the art readout electronic like Medipix3 these assemblies open new possibilities for medical imaging.
At the Freiburger Materialforschungszentrum CdTe, CdZnTe and GaAs detectors have been studied for several years. These studies include the crystal growth, material characterization and processing of radiation detectors. In the last years the technology for hybridization of CdTe based pixel detectors was developed for small pixel pitches. Different types of pixel detectors have been produced using our own technology with small pixels down to 55 µm and high connection density up to 65,000 pixels. CdTe wafers up to 3 inch diameter have been used for processing the pixel detectors. Detectors with a size of 14x14 mm² and 42x28 mm² were developed using the Medipix2 and recently Medipix3 electronics.
The detector performance of the assemblies was tested with different radiation sources and X-ray tubes. The obtained results regarding the efficiency, the homogeneity and the spectroscopic features are presented in comparison with the data of material characterization before processing. The first results of Medipix3 CdTe assemblies will be shown and discussed for the modality of Spectroscopic Imaging.
